Honeywell Asia Pacific Legal Team Named among 2015 Most Innovative by Financial Times

Honeywell’s Asia Pacific legal team has been named one of the 2015 Most Innovative In-house Legal Teams in Asia Pacific by the Financial Times (FT). It was listed as one of four “Standout” teams, the FT’s highest category, for having created a globally aligned, regionally empowered law department that is supporting expansion into high-growth and developing economies by providing broad analysis of technological, commercial, and legal risks. Honeywell’s Asia Pacific legal team has developed innovative processes that identify risks unique to the region, foster consensus, and facilitate decision making by business leaders.

Asia Pacific general counsel Gerard Willis said, “Our role is to do a risk analysis rather than just a legal analysis. The effectiveness of our approach is illustrated by construction of major facilities and establishment of new joint ventures for a new turbo factory in Wuhan (one of China’s major auto hubs), a manufacturing plant producing a foam blowing agent that will contribute to the adoption of environmentally sustainable refrigeration chemicals in China, and the sale of various systems including wheels and brakes and flight controls for China’s first regional passenger jet, the C-919.”

The FT ranking is very competitive. This year 81 law firms and 33 Asia Pacific multinational corporations and regional in-house legal teams were nominated. The FT’s research partner, RSG Consulting, evaluated 439 submissions and conducted a survey as well as client, lawyer, and expert interviews. In-house legal departments were evaluated by RSG based upon Originality, Business Alignment, Value Creation and Impact. The 2015 FT Innovative Lawyers Report for Asia Pacific was published with the newspaper and sent to more than 2 million readers.

In January, the Asia Pacific legal team also received the 2014 Outstanding Intellectual Property Management Team award at a program hosted by China IP Magazine and China Daily.
