With nearly a century of aerospace achievements, Honeywell’s family tree features some of aviation’s most famous names—Sperry, Bendix, Garret, AiResearch, Pioneer, Lycoming, Grimes, King and AlliedSignal. From Honeywell’s earliest days to its most recent advancements, Honeywell Aerospace celebrates its contributions to aviation history:
First Autopilot Flight Controller – Sperry Gyro Stabilizer (1914)Where others saw a scientific curiosity or a child’s toy, visionary Elmer Sperry saw the future of controlled flight. With son Lawrence Sperry, an aviation pioneer in his own right, Elmer harnessed the power of the gyroscope to navigate and stabilize aircraft. The Sperrys pioneered flight instruments and many other aviation innovations. In 1914, Lawrence demonstrated the first autopilot—the Sperry Gyro Stabilizer—in Paris by climbing out of the cockpit onto the wing of his Curtiss Flying Boat so the cheering crowd lining the banks of the Seine could see that the device was flying the airplane. |
