KCP mentor wins FIRST Robotics award

FIRST Robotics is one of many educational programs the Kansas City Plant supports to encourage students to take an interest in math and science. FIRST Robotics helps high school students discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be. One of the unique aspects of FIRST Robotics is the support and involvement of volunteers who mentor and coach teams.

For the past three years, Kevin Schimpf, KCP senior engineer, has mentored the Broncobots FIRST Robotics team at Lee's Summit North High School. At the Colorado Regional competition in March, Schimpf was named winner of the Woodie Flowers award, presented to an outstanding mentor.

The Woodie Flowers Award celebrates effective communication in the art and science of engineering and design. The award was founded in 1996 to recognize mentors who lead, inspire, and empower using excellent communication skills. Only one person wins this prestigious award at each regional.

Schimpf is not alone in his commitment. KCP has a growing community of employees who support FIRST Robotics. More than 30 volunteers from the Kansas City Plant helped manage and run the Kansas City Regional competition in February. In addition, more than 60 KCP employees have devoted countless volunteer hours as mentors and coaches over the past few months to help 28 area high schools prepare to participate in FIRST competitions across the country.
