The Story Behind Salmon Sisters Collection
XTRATUF boots are iconic to the commercial fishing community – a boot that defines Alaskans’ shared understanding of hard work and adventure, worn with pride on and off the water. In 2016, we were the first brand to offer women-specific deck boots.
As part of a commitment to outfitting the female fisherman, XTRATUF has partnered with Alaska fishermen sisters, Emma Laukitis and Claire Neaton, better known as the Salmon Sisters.
The Salmon Sisters is a seafood and design company based in Alaska, deeply influenced by the wilderness of Alaska and the sustainable fisheries of the North Pacific. Founded in 2012, the duo’s products are designed in Alaska, inspired by nautical tradition, and made for a community of fishermen, adventurers and ocean enthusiasts.
The Salmon Sisters provide the artwork that add an extra touch of Alaska to the XTRATUF footwear styles.
Sea Greens design: It celebrates the aquatic plants that are consumed by subsistence users and have cultural importance in coastal Alaska. Seaweed keeps the ocean healthy by providing habitat for marine animals and storing carbon dioxide, the leading cause of ocean acidification. “Seaweed keeps the ocean healthy by providing habitat for marine animals and storing carbon dioxide, the leading cause of ocean acidification,” said Salmon Sister Founder Claire Neaton. “We love making pickles out of seaweed, and use it as fertilizer in our garden.”
Five species of salmon: The design features all types of salmon that the Salmon Sisters catch in Alaska, as well as Steelhead and Rainbow trout. These fish are beloved to sport fishermen, commercial fishermen, subsistence fishermen, biologists, coastal residents and seafood lovers. “Our lives, like so many Alaskan lives, revolve around the seasonal movement and life cycle of these fish,” said Salmon Sister Founder Emma Laukitis. “We figured it was time all the fish-loving ladies out there had a pair of lucky XTRATUF boots or shoes like these!”
