Honeywell Hometown Heroes Award Goes to U.S. Space & Rocket Center CEO for STEM Inspiration

Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC), has received the Honeywell Hometown Heroes Award in recognition of her efforts to inspire teachers and students globally to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education and careers. Under her leadership, USSRC, in collaboration with Honeywell Hometown Solutions, established two very successful STEM programs - Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy in 2004, and Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy in 2010.

The Honeywell Hometown Heroes Award honors individuals who are exceptional community leaders focused on making a positive impact in their communities. These dedicated, caring and highly motivated individuals are recognized for improving the lives of others, making their hometowns better places to live, and doing the right work, right now.

“I am humbled and honored to accept this award,” said Barnhart. “I get a great deal of joy working with the students and teachers who attend USSRC each year, and I'm proud to have helped create these two outstanding programs with Honeywell.”

The Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy, a scholarship program for middle school math and science teachers, has inspired more than 2,100 teachers, who in turn have inspired more than 2 million students around the world.

The Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy teaches children of Honeywell employees leadership skills in STEM using innovative interactive technology, science-oriented workshops and team exercises. More than 1,450 students from 47 countries have been awarded this scholarship program.

Barnhart is a Huntsville native and University of Alabama alumna. She joined the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of Captain. She earned an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in education from Vanderbilt University. Earlier this year Barnhart was named to the Alabama Spaceport Authority Advisory Task Force by Alabama Governor Robert Bentley.
