Inspiring Engineering in Mexicali

Meeting a Nobel laureate is usually a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students. Ricardo Gonzalez-Lanz, a senior at CETYS University, Mexicali, has now met two laureates two years in a row.

Last week Ricardo attended the Honeywell Initiative for Science & Engineering (HISE) at nearby Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC), featuring Nobel Laureate George Smoot, 2006 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics. A year earlier, the program, which aims to inspire students to pursue careers in science and engineering, was brought to Ricardo's university at CETYS.

A Honeywell Innovator Scholar, Ricardo credits HISE as well as other Honeywell Hometown Solutions' programs for giving him the inspiration to choose engineering as his career path.

“I love engineering,” Ricardo explained to Nobel Laureate George Smoot during a lunch break at UABC. “It gives me the ability to look for and solve the challenges of the future.” After graduating this summer, Ricardo will begin his career in engineering at the Mexicali Research & Technology Center.

Since the program's launch in 2006, thousands of students have participated.

“Inspiring students is a corporate imperative,” said Barbara Brockett, vice president, Honeywell Aerospace Engineering. “HISE brings together academia and industry so that students can imagine that they, too, can aspire to do great things.”

“We must keep the pipeline of engineering talent flowing to ensure we maintain great positions in good industries now and in the future,” said Luis Sanchez, president, Honeywell Mexico. “Programs like HISE are an important way to build a base of young engineers in Mexico that will help drive the economic, social, and cultural improvement of this country well into the future.”

Honeywell has sponsored 27 Nobel laureates at 43 HISE events at 29 total schools around the world. It was the fifth time Honeywell brought the laureate program to Mexico, and the second time to UABC.
