Honeywell's Software Design Suite OnRAMP Helping Auto Industry with Powertrain Development

Honeywell’s OnRAMP Design Suite can help auto makers improve fuel economy, reduce material costs, and minimize warranty costs by optimizing powertrain controls. All of these benefits can be realized while also significantly reducing development time compared to traditional solutions.
Honeywell recently hosted key influencers and advanced control experts from leading global vehicle makers including Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Caterpillar, John Deere, and Harley-Davidson, along with a number of universities at the recently concluded Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress in Detroit. Anna Stefanopoulou, director of Automotive Research Center and distinguished mechanical engineering professor at the University of Michigan, provided an engaging talk on advanced controls within the automotive industry. Stefanopoulou highlighted several improvements to comply with more stringent regulations which have been realized through advanced controls. Her team are users of Honeywell’s OnRAMP Design Suite and apply it in their research and development.
The OnRAMP suite of programs has been used by several Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) to analyze and solve complex powertrain challenges, including:
- Advanced Airpath Control – Allowed a leading OEM to achieve a significant reduction in engine development cost and time.
- Virtual Sensors for NOx, NH3, Turbo Speed, and EGR Flow – Has shown OEMs benefits in terms of reducing their bill of materials, reducing warranty issues and improving engine diagnostics. Virtual sensors can offer up to $400 bill of material savings per vehicle.
- Adaptive Cruise Control – Model Predictive Control contributes to minimizing calibration effort. Combined with road grade preview and real-time optimization of fuel consumption, an OEM recorded a >3 percent gain in fuel economy for a same journey time, measured against the current best in class system.
- Integrated Vehicle Health Management – Real-time diagnostics optimizing vehicle performance provides around 5 percent reduction in warranty cost with increased vehicle reliability.
