Honeywell Green Boot Camp Inspires 50 Middle School Teachers in San Diego

This year, 50 middle school teachers from 11 countries received scholarships in San Diego to attend the Honeywell Green Boot Camp, an annual workshop that provides educators with the information, experience and resources to bring lessons on energy efficiency, sustainability and the environment back to their classrooms. The event is part of Honeywell's commitment to supporting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.
Maria Rowena Punsalan, a marine biology teacher from the Philippines, has always been passionate about environmental stewardship. Lately, however, her passion has become more urgent as her country endures an increasing number of strong storms with greater frequency and intensity.
“When Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines in 2013, it was a real eye-opener for us,” Maria explained at the 2015 Honeywell Green Boot Camp (GBC) in San Diego, an annual week-long, hands-on workshop that gives middle school teachers the tools to teach lessons in energy efficiency, sustainability and conservation. “Through GBC,” she continued, “I'm gaining numerous techniques to teach students about the fragile world around us and how they can help it adapt and recover more quickly after a natural disaster.”
“Simple actions, such as unplugging small appliances, using smart thermostats and LED lights, can make a big difference in energy efficiency in homes, schools‚Ä¶virtually any building,” said Mike Taylor, sales manager, Honeywell Building Solutions. The largest market for Honeywell Comprehensive Energy Efficiency projects are the same K-12 schools these teachers and their students teach and learn in every day.
The GBC Class of 2015 included teachers from Australia, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, India, Mexico, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Turkey, the United Kingdom and United States. Sponsored by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company's corporate citizenship initiative, Green Boot Camp offers practical skills such as building rain barrels, wind turbines and garden irrigation that can be easily applied in the classroom.
