Honeywell China Sichuan Earthquake Rebuilt Schools Celebrate Six Years

Honeywell, together with the teachers and students from Honeywell’s Sichuan Earthquake Rebuilt Schools, held a celebration today in southwestern China’s Sichuan Province for the schools’ 6th anniversary and Chinese Teacher’s Day.

After the devastating Sichuan Earthquake in 2008, Honeywell has been proactively supporting the post-disaster rehabilitation work, including rebuilding Honeywell United Primary School and Honeywell Baohe Primary School in An and Zhongjiang counties. The two schools support more than 300 students from 11 nearby villages.

Participants of the celebration event include representatives from the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu, local government, education authorities, media, teachers and students, and Honeywell executives and volunteers.

“During the past six years, students, teachers, parents and the community have demonstrated incredible courage and resiliency,” said Dr. Wesley Luo, Vice President and General Manager of HTSC, at the ceremony. “Honeywell is proud to support the schools and local community, and we continue our efforts to further improve the students’ education in a safer and much more enabling learning environment.”

As part of the celebration, Fan Hongwei and Shi Wei, two engineers from Honeywell Technology Solutions China (HTSC), conducted a hands-on science class with the students.

“I loved learning about unmanned aerial vehicle, it’s not boring at all,” said He Jinzhi, a fourth-grade student from Honeywell United Primary School. “The session reminded me of the exciting visit to Honeywell’s technology experience center in Shanghai last summer.”

As part of its long-term commitment to the community, Honeywell revitalized the two rebuilt schools this summer with renovated playground and refreshed classrooms.

“The schools now have best-in-class equipment and facilities,” Mr. Jiang Zhigang, Principal of Honeywell United Primary School. “But Honeywell’s support is not just about building materials and hardware. More importantly, the various educational programs that Honeywell has provided over the years offer invaluable learning and experiencing opportunities to both teachers and students. We appreciate the unwavering dedication shown by Honeywell and its employees.”

Honeywell and Sichuan Rebuilt Schools

Honeywell’s humanitarian relief efforts in China include:

Financial Aid:

Launched in November 2011, this program is designed to help those students in need. Each employee volunteer supports one student with a donation of 400 RMB (USD70) per year, which also establishes a longstanding engagement between students and Honeywell volunteers. To date, 78 students from the two schools have benefited from the program.

ScholorshipScholarship & Summer Camp:

Each year, Honeywell sponsors more than a dozen students and teachers to visit Shanghai for exchange with local schools and visit of our campus and Honeywell Technology Experience China (HTEC). Launched in 2012, this yearly scholarship program is designed to help broaden their perspectives and improve teaching/learning skills.

RemoteRemote Teaching:

This initiative, launched in 2013, provides students and teachers from the two Sichuan schools with a unique opportunity to interact with Honeywell’s scientists and engineers through online video conference. The curriculum has covered math, physics, chemistry, English, safety and security, etc.

MulticulturalMulticultural Experience:

In April 2013, Honeywell brought a group of students from American School of Doha, who are from 20 different countries, to Sichuan for a 2-day exchange program with the students and teachers from the two rebuilt schools. Chinese and international students participated in a series of cross-cultural lectures and discussions. The kids also jointly decorated the two schools with colorful paintings on their walls.
