Honeywell Employees Donate Time, Energy to Make Life Better for Students in Mexico

More than 1,000 employees, along with community volunteers, rolled up their sleeves and put their home improvement skills to good use in Mexico this fall. As part of Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s global citizenship initiative, several Housing and Shelter events in October and November benefitted thousands of youngsters at schools and community centers in San Luis Potosi, Chihuahua, Mexicali and Mexico City, Mexico.

Revamped Miguel Hidalgo Elementary School, San Luis Potosi

On October 12, nearly 400 employees, family members, parents and teachers in San Luis Potosi revamped the Miguel Hidalgo Elementary School. They bought, assembled and installed swing sets, monkey bars and picnic tables, laid gravel, painted several areas, and water-proofed roofs. Five hundred students will benefit from the improved learning environment.

“We thank Honeywell for all their efforts in our community,” said San Luis Potosi Governor Juan Manual Carreras Lopez. “Not only are they expanding operations here, they are also doing great community labor with a local elementary school that needs some TLC. I think it’s really important to combine efforts between the government and society, and we appreciate Honeywell’s continued support.”

Volunteering at Albergue Escolar Rural, Chihuahua

Employees in Chihuahua volunteered Oct. 17 at the Albergue Escolar Rural organization, where 50 students live at the shelter and receive schooling and enjoy other activities during the week. The renovation project included cleaning, painting, gardening, installing new closets and repairing the air conditioner.

“Year after year Honeywell’s support has grown in the number of volunteers, achieving teamwork and providing an opportunity for employees to support our local community,” said Cecilio Lopez, Plant Director, Honeywell Chihuahua Manufacturing Operations. “We thank all the employees and their families who were part of this successful event and look forward to next year’s project.”

Rehabilitation at Julio T. Perez Elementary School, Mexicali

On November 7, Mexicali employees repaired and updated the Julio T. Perez Elementary School, which is on the outskirts of the city. Because the school had struggled to find funding for required renovations, volunteers worked on long-overdue repairs that addressed the basic needs of the 248 students. Projects included cleaning and repainting the facility, providing sports amenity improvements, adding lighting and fixing the surrounding fence to ensure a safer environment for learning.

“Honeywell’s Housing and Shelter events are some of the most rewarding projects for our employees and business partners,” said Ricardo Garcia, Director of Engineering, Mexicali Research and Technology Center. “Step by step, school by school, Honeywell Mexicali is helping to provide better, safer and more comfortable facilities for hundreds of local children in the communities in which we live and work.”
