Honeywell and NASA Put STEM Education in 'Motion' with FMA Live!

Students across the West Coast are in for a treat this spring as Honeywell and NASA launch their award-winning, hip-hop physics education program, FMA Live! Forces in Motion on Monday, March 7. Students in more than 40 public, private and military-affiliated middle schools in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington will be inspired to explore science, technology, enginering and math (STEM) education thanks to this unique and experiential program.

Originally launched in 2004, FMA Live! is a high-energy, live stage show featuring actors, hip-hop dancers, music videos and interviews with NASA scientists. Named after Newton’s Second Law of Motion (Force equals Mass times Acceleration), the innovative program captures the audience’s attention with interactive scientific demonstrations, as it helps students understand the role physics plays in day-to-day life.

“Many of today’s engineering challenges will be solved decades into the future by the next generation of engineers and scientists,” said Mike Bennett, president, Honeywell Hometown Solutions (HHS). “To prepare students to become tomorrow’s innovators, Honeywell invests in programs like FMA Live! to ignite that spark of inspiration in fun and relatable ways.”

Studies have indicated that interactive, hands-on learning is one of the most effective way to engage students in STEM studies. The primary goal of FMA Live! is to encourage middle school students to pursue STEM academic coursework and, ultimately, inspire them to seek careers in STEM-related fields.

“It is critically important to get middle school-aged students aware of and excited about STEM topics, especially physics,” said Donald James, NASA’s associate administrator for Education. “We’ve seen FMA Live! make the introduction easier and, thanks to our collaboration with Honeywell, we’re inspiring students to set their sights on future careers in the critical STEM fields.”

Since its inception, FMA Live! has reached more than 455,000 middle school students across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
