Ushering China's Future Generations to STEM

As a leading technology company, Honeywell believes in the power of science education and is committed to getting kids excited about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning. Recently, the Honeywell Technology Experience Center (HTEC) in Shanghai hosted 80 visitors, more than half of of which were teenagers from local communities, at its first ever "Open Day."

The HTEC Open Day event provided the teenagers with a one-hour tour of the Honeywell center, where they got a clear picture of the world's challenges in the areas of energy, safety, urbanization, etc., and gained understanding of how Honeywell technologies are addressing these challenges and improving quality of life for people everyday. The tour was followed by a lecture on advanced refrigeration technology given by a Honeywell engineer. Unlike a traditional classroom, vivid demonstrations and cartoon videos were utilized to make the knowledge more accessible to our young visitors.

“We believe that the HTEC Open Day program will inspire the next generation's scientific spirit and innovative thinking.” said Lydia Lu, Vice President of Communications, Honeywell Asia High Growth Regions. “We will continue to actively promote STEM education through a series of such interactive engagement programs.”

STEM Summer Camp for Sichuan Earthquake Rebuilt Schools
Another opportunity this summer to promote STEM education for youth in China took place at the Honeywell Scholarship & Summer Camp program.

In the first week of summer vacation, a dozen of students and teachers from the Honeywell United Primary School and Baohe Primary School, two schools rebuilt following the devastating 2008 earthquake in that region participated. They had the opportunity to attend an airplane model workshop in Zhangjiang Primary School, visit the HTEC and the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and discuss their science studies with Honeywell engineers.

“The program is really an eye-opening experience for both the students and teachers.” said Ms. Xia, teacher from Baohe Primary School, “I will impart the learned knowledge to my students and further motivate them in their future learning of STEM subjects.”

Launched in 2012, Honeywell sponsors more than a dozen students and teachers each year to visit Shanghai including exchange with local schools and visit of our campus and HTEC.
