Honeywell Leads Science Education in Jersey City

Honeywell and New Jersey Audubon partner with Jersey City Public Schools to make science come alive in the classroom during Honeywell Institute for Ecosystems Education (HIEE). In June 2016, more than 80 Jersey City, NJ, students from seven schools showcased their urban sustainability projects learned during hands-on lessons taught by HIEE teachers. The Jersey City Eco-Schools Student Forum provided a unique opportunity for the students to share and learn from each other, creating a community that is invested in the sustainability of Jersey City. Students presented projects that ranged from window screens to improve a school’s air quality, to the use of a hydroponics system to grow herbs and other crops for use by a school cafeteria.

Dale Rosselet, VP for Education, New Jersey Audubon

“The Honeywell technology for ecosystems education is really focusing on giving teachers a learning process that supports STEM education and also supports the teaching of the next generation science standards.

Last summer, the Honeywell Institute for Ecosystems Education was held with a group of teachers from Jersey City and we went through a week long summer Institute, we learned all sorts of things about the ecosystem, about sustainability, biodiversity, and then the charge was that the teachers would take what they learned back to their students, integrated what did they learn into the curriculum and then work with their students to come up with year long projects. “

Aijanah Thomas, Jersey City Student

“In class we learn about it, but if we really get to have physical activity it’s easier because it’s more fun and kids really focus on learning. “

Sarah Brown – Jersey City Teacher

“ I think, especially with teenagers, they tend to go through day to day with without really noticing their surroundings, and as soon as you put a lens to it they become so aware, that they realize – oh, maybe we should start thinking more immediately about what to do instead of just assuming somebody else is going to fix the problem. “
