Our First-Generation Ion Traps Emerge

When it comes to quantum computing, we have many firsts to look forward to.
Currently, Honeywell Quantum Solutions (HQS) has started testing our first generation of commercial micro-fabricated trapped-ion qubit devices.
These devices, or traps, hold the qubits which will be integrated into Honeywell’s quantum computing systems. Traps are fabricated in our Minneapolis microfabrication production facility and build in many innovations developed over the last several decades by our micro-sensor and radiation-hard micro-electronic product portfolios.
The first generation of traps incorporates multiple innovations along a technology roadmap that includes different arrangements, or architectures, of qubits. The different architectures under evaluation include one-dimensional (1D) chains of ions as well as a scalable design of a two-dimensional (2D) arrays which eliminate qubit count limitations imposed by a linear qubit arrangement. The success of these devices not only provides an enabling component for Honeywell’s first quantum computer, but also for generations beyond as we scale development to build larger quantum computers capable of solving more complex problems.
The fabrication of traps also demonstrates a unique feature of our end-to-end quantum computing technologies. This includes all components from the traps that form computational qubits to the augmented control electronics and user interfaces already in place for managing critical infrastructure around the globe.
