Safeguarding Turkey’s Energy Pipeline

Energy demand is on the rise. As Europe’s need for natural gas is predicted to grow by 2 percent per year through 2030, Turkey’s Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) helps transport it there from the Middle East and Caspian regions.


Along the way, compressor stations maintain optimal pressure levels so that the natural gas can be transported through the pipeline without loss or contamination. Honeywell is supplying a suite of control and safety technology along the entire length of the pipeline to ensure reliable operation.


“[Our] integrated solutions will enable TANAP to detect and resolve operational issues early, enhancing reliability for this important project,” said Pieter Krynauw, vice president and general manager for Honeywell Process Solutions’ Projects and Automation Solutions business, adding the company provides similar coverage for “almost 94,000 miles of natural gas and liquid pipelines, including many of the world’s longest systems.”


The Honeywell system improves visibility and situational awareness, so operators can detect, avoid and respond to incidents that could endanger people, the pipeline or the environment. The technology also ensures that TANAP provides an uninterrupted supply of gas throughout the pipeline.


The 1,850-kilometer pipeline is expected to be completed in 2018 and will be designed to transport up to 31 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Turkey’s eastern border with Georgia to its western border with Greece. Turkey is already a major consumer of natural gas, which has surpassed oil as the country’s main energy source. With this pipeline, Turkey is also becoming a key energy transit hub.
