How Connectivity is Taking Buildings to New HeightsHow do you define a building? If your immediate answer is four walls and a roof, it’s time to adjust your thinking. Thanks in part to the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) — which centers on the fundamental notion of connectivity between everything, from infrastructure to devices — buildings can be more than vessels that shelter an organization. Instead, they can be assets and drive bottom line benefits.

Simply put, this booming connectivity can help organizations put their buildings to work—if they have the right technologies in place. That’s the idea between Connected Services within our buildings business: a portfolio of technologies that draws from the collective power of IoT devices, cloud applications and the expertise of Honeywell’s service engineers.

John Boothroyd, global marketing director for Honeywell Building Solutions, recently answered some questions to help explain just what this new offering really means.

What is Connected Services, exactly?
Simply put, it is a portfolio of technologies from Honeywell Building Solutions that takes advantage of the internet and all of the different sensors and endpoints in a building to transform what it can do for an organization. This includes providing more detailed, real-time insights into how a piece of equipment is operating so organizations can address issues faster.

What technologies make up Connected Services?
Apps like the Honeywell Vector Occupant App and Honeywell Pulse for Connected Buildings, and the just-announced Honeywell Outcome Based Service make up the Connected Services portfolio, and help deepen the connection between buildings and their occupants.

What does Connected Services look like in action, then?
It can take shape in several different ways, depending on who’s taking advantage of it. That’s the beauty of a connected approach; the different people that comprise a building all stand to benefit. A few examples:
  • For an office employee: The Honeywell Vector Occupant App allows him or her to instantly indicate if the surrounding area is too hot or cold, or to securely move about the workplace with the touch of a screen. 
  • For facility manager: The Honeywell Pulse for Connected Buildings app provides real-time facility performance notifications about building equipment to reduce the impact of critical incidents.
  • For a building’s service and maintenance team: They’ll spend less time manually checking building equipment—an often daunting task for multi-facility campuses—and instead focusing maintenance activities where they can have the most impact. That’s what the newly-announced Outcome Based Service does, focusing efforts to optimize equipment efficiency and tracking performance in real time. Think working smarter, not harder when it comes to service. 

Let’s talk more about Outcome Based Service, what kind of impact can it have on a building?
Energy consumption can drift by up to 7 percent annually if it’s not monitored closely. With Outcome Based Service, we’re taking advantage of sensors in buildings, connecting them to internet and applying analytics to monitor performance and ensure building equipment is operating in line with key performance indicators — from HVAC systems to security technologies, including cameras and access control — to keep building performance on track.
