Teachers Study Up on Science

New Jersey teachers learn new ways to inspire students to create sustainable communities

Recently, teachers became the students. At the Honeywell Institute for Ecosystems Education (HIEE), sixteen educators learned critical and creative thinking skills through socio-environmental problem solving.

A collaboration between Honeywell, New Jersey Audubon, and Jersey City Public Schools, HIEE has inspired more than 1,000 Jersey City students over the last decade to help create more sustainable schools.

The four-day innovative summer institute combines classroom instruction with diverse outdoor experiences, including a visit to a former Jersey City Reservoir and a school butterfly garden.

"Honeywell Institute for Ecosystems Education has opened up my tool box and empowered me to allow my kids, from the bottom-up, to make a great environment for themselves."

HIEE "The lessons learned will help my students’ critical thinking skills.  The student-driven design of the program will ensure that they are asking the right questions and developing their ideas more fully.  This program will help me to inspire my students for life-long learning. "

HIEE "I am planning sustainability and environmental work that can be done locally.  I am going to start school by showing my students the biodiversity of the school courtyard, then we are going to look at the neighborhood around the school.  I am going to take them to Lincoln Park in Jersey City and then let them go from there and explore the rest of the world."

- Ahmed Hassanein, Joseph H. Brensinger School #17, Jersey City

"HIEE will change the way I teach my students. Moving away from lectures, which do not hold their attention, I am going to give them topics, and have them teach me.  In a sense, they are getting their hands-on experience before I even give them much of the information.  And together, we will connect the information."

- Yaniris Varela-Ulloa, North Bergen High School, North Bergen

"The Honeywell Institute for Ecosystems Education has opened my eyes to local and community resources that can be utilized in our city.  For example, the trip to the Jersey City Reservoir was inspiring.  I want my kids to know it is available and that they can learn about biodiversity right in our community."

- Gabrielle Flora, Henry Snyder High School, Jersey City

These teachers will be implementing programs in their classrooms this year. As a result of last year's program, more than 150 Jersey City students from 11 schools showcased urban sustainability projects at the second Jersey City Student Forum in June. Guided by 2016 HIEE teachers, projects ranged from installing timers to encourage energy savings to building a butterfly habitat and garden for art and music inspiration.
