iTech Skills and Challenge Wins Romanian 'Invest in Education' Award

The STEM program teaches young students new skills in computation and problem solving 

Junior Achievement Romania presented the 2018 “Invest in Education” award to Honeywell, recognizing iTech Skills and Challenge as the first program in the country designed to teach students in grades 5 through 8 coding and how to use technology to improve their abilities, skills and knowledge.

iTech Skills and Challenge, sponsored by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative, includes educational learning-by-doing activities. It is part of the JA science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) educational program “We Communicate with Technology,” which follows the national curriculum for IT for secondary schools approved by the Romanian Ministry of Education.

Students learned the Scratch programming language and created their first animated characters and games using computational and problem-solving skills, teamwork and critical thinking. The program is being rolled out to 15 secondary schools in Bucharest this year, reaching more than 1,400 students.

More than 400 participants, including Ministry of Education representatives, teachers, students and other companies, attended the award ceremony.
