- Getting a Fresh Angle on Industrial Inspections
Drones Offer a New Angle on Industrial Sites
Three ways our new inspection service can keep workers safer and improve efficiency
September 7, 2017
One of the big headlines recently has been the incredible value drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), can provide when a natural disaster strikes. They are invaluable in assessing damage, accessing otherwise dangerous locations, and providing rescue workers and industry workers with a new perspective to aid speedy decision making.
UAVs are also proving to be indispensable tools for industry. They provide improved worker safety for inspections in dangerous locations and industries – think of post-storm damage, high-temperature flare stack inspections, accessing remote distribution line inspections in rural environments, etc.
The new Honeywell InView UAV inspection service uses theIntel® Falcon™ 8+ UAV to give industrial customers a powerful new tool.
Keep Workers Safer
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, utility line workers have one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs in the UnitedStates, with 21.5 annual fatalities from high-voltage lines for every 100,000workers. By using the inspection service, utility companies can send a UAV to perform routine inspections of substations, transmission towers and power lines while keeping boots on the ground and workers safe. For utilities, using a UAV for inspections offers safer and more cost-effective means than existing methods using helicopters, cherry pickers, ladders and walking inspections.
Historically, critical structure inspections are siloed by organizations and by individuals within organizations. Now it’s possible to create standardized inspections where customers can create operational efficiencies in the office and out in the field.
Go Beyond Data Capture
UAVs are touted for their data-gathering capabilities, but without analytics, more data is simply more data. This service can synthesize vast quantities of data to identify only what is needed and actionable, translating workers' tacit knowledge into valuable information that provides actionable insights for business.
