What's Next in Aerospace
The 25-hour cockpit voice recorder (CVR) mandate is a new FAA regulation requiring all newly manufactured aircraft to be equipped with CVRs that store at least 25 hours of audio—up from the previous two-hour minimum. This rule enhances aviation safety by providing investigators with access to a full day’s worth of cockpit audio in the event of an incident.
Inertial systems, or inertial navigation systems (INS), are self-contained devices that use accelerometers and gyroscopes to track an object’s position, orientation, and velocity without relying on external signals like GPS. Common in aircraft, spacecraft, and submarines, these systems calculate movement by measuring acceleration and rotation from a known starting point. Honeywell’s inertial systems are known for their precision and reliability, often used in both commercial and defense applications to provide accurate navigation even in GPS-denied environments.
Fighter pilots breathe in the cockpit using Honeywell’s Connected Breathing Regulator and Anti-G system (cBRAG). It delivers oxygen and adjusts pressure automatically based on flight conditions. During high-G maneuvers, it increases pressure to keep blood circulating and prevent blackouts and built-in sensors monitor performance and log flight data.
An aircraft’s navigation system integrates GPS, inertial reference systems, and flight management systems to determine precise position, speed, and direction. These systems work together to guide the aircraft along its planned route, automatically adjusting for wind, weather, and air traffic.
Advanced avionics like weather radar, terrain awareness systems, and real-time data analytics help pilots navigate safely through challenging conditions.
