US Army to Benefit from Honeywell Fuel Efficiency Enhancements to M1 Abrams Tank Engine

$7.8M contract modification leads to 19 advanced reliability and cost-savings projects through 2015
PHOENIX, Oct. 13, 2014 – Honeywell Aerospace (NYSE: HON) has received a $7.8 million contract modification from the U.S. Army for the Total InteGrated Engine Revitalization (TIGER) program that supports the M1 Abrams AGT1500 turbine engine, which Honeywell provides.
The additional funds will launch 19 advanced reliability and cost-savings (ARCS) projects to provide fuel-efficiency improvements of up to 13 percent for the AGT1500, while improving durability and reducing support costs.“The AGT1500 has been one of our most successfully implemented military systems for more than a quarter century,” said Mike Madsen, president of Defense and Space strategic business unit, Honeywell Aerospace.
“Honeywell’s efforts to enhance the AGT1500 through the ARCS projects and TIGER process will help the U.S. military realize critical fuel savings, reliability improvements and cost reductions all while advancing the Abrams vehicle’s ability to handle any future deployments and missions.”
About the AGT1500 and TIGER
Honeywell’s AGT1500 is the turbine engine used by the U.S. Army, United States Marine Corps and National Guard to power the M1 Abrams fleet. The engine provides 1,500 horsepower to propel the 72 ton tank at speeds up to 42 mph, enabling superior acceleration and mobility. The AGT1500’s reliability and performance has enabled the Abrams vehicle to become a staple of the military arsenal, accumulating more than 40 million miles over the past 25 years.
The TIGER program is an Army initiative to revitalize the AGT1500 engine fleet in support of the Abrams family of vehicles. The TIGER upgrades have increased the reliability of the AGT1500 engine by overhauling it to a near-new engine standard, then tailoring subsequent repair work scopes based on reason for return and remaining useful life of the parts. TIGER engines include improved durability-based design improvements using Honeywell’s more than 60 years of experience managing turbine engines for military applications.
