Meet the next generation of students who showed off their best aviation ideas

For our 2017 Honeywell AeroStar Innovation Contest, more than 70 students submitted 28 proposals to figure it out.
The winners had the opportunity to visit with Honeywell leaders at our Beijing office. “I'm glad to meet those brilliant rising stars in aviation and very impressed with their excellent hands-on abilities and their creativity to bring new ideas to life and to solve the actual problems in the aviation industry.” said Scott Zhang, President of HTS.
Zhenhui Zhang, a two-time winner, is a big fan of Honeywell Aerospace and has followed this year's Honeywell Connected Aircraft world tour on social media. “ I really appreciate the opportunity to meet and talk with Honeywell senior leaders and engineers. It is also a great learning experience for me to gain insights on what products/solutions are really needed in aviation industry.”
The winning projects are:
Best Innovation Award: Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS)
University: Civil Aviation University of China
Team Members: Zhenhui Zhang, Dong Li
Project Details: This project aims to improve the surface movement efficiency for airports. This integrated solution provides a low cost, scalable approach to achieve most of Advanced Surface Movement Guidance & Control System (A-SMGCS) functionalities toward to a more effective surface guidance and control system.
Best Achievement Award: Riveting Technological Simulation and Its Parameter Data Base Building
University: Northwestern Polytechnical University
Team Members: Jianguo Guo, Ao Liao, Long Tan
Project Details: To address high labor and material cost challenge, this project team provided a database for composite material riveting technological parameters and utilized parametric modeling methodology to simulate composite material riveting process. The end users of this product can be aircraft manufacturer or any other industry manufacture technology division. There are potentially significant savings for both man power and material cost by applying the approach in this proposal and the proposal itself was highly accomplished with high feasibility.
Best DIY Award: Bi-Rotor VTOL Tail-Sitter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
University: Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Team Members: Yuxuan Li, Daxiong Lu, Haochen Liu
Project Details: The project team built and demonstrated a bi-rotor vertical take-off and landing tail-sitter unmanned aerial vehicle. The concept of this project has certain research and promotion value. Project team designed and handy made this prototype, and proceeded with a test flight for this prototype. The prototype had been demonstrated during Aero Star finals.
Each year contending students submit proposals centered around aviation topics. The finalists then present their proposals in front of the contest committee which consists of senior engineers from HTS China Aerospace team, and compete for three award categories.
