A portable AC is designed to cool a dedicated area or single room and can be moved on wheels. Honeywell models generally include a window kit and exhaust hose.

The heating function may not activate when the ambient temperature is too high. Honeywell specifies activation within a model-dependent temperature threshold around 44–81°F.
- Check that the timer is not enabled.
- Lower the target temperature if it is too close to the current room temperature.

High humidity may be filling the water tank. Drain it as needed and use heating at about 50% RH or lower.
Mold or mildew may be present in the water tank or drain line. Drain and clean the tank with warm water and mild detergent, and flush the drain line to remove buildup.

The hose stretches to about 4 ft (120 cm). Honeywell advises against extending it because extra length can restrict exhaust airflow, reduce cooling and potentially damage the blower or affect warranty coverage.

MN, MM and HL Series vents are manually adjustable. Honeywell lists certain HF Series models with automatic swing.
- Make sure BTU capacity matches the room.
- Close doors/windows that allow cooled air to escape.
- Keep the exhaust hose as short as practical.
- Lower the temperature setting.
- Clean the filter.
- Clear blocked air intakes/outlets.
- Reduce direct solar heat with window coverings.
Use an adequately sized BTU unit, improve insulation and room boundaries, reduce direct solar gain, and consider occupancy and ceiling height. Crowded rooms require more cooling capacity.
It is designed to cool one room efficiently. A fan may circulate some cooled air to adjacent rooms, but this reduces the cooling effect in the original room.
It carries hot exhaust air outdoors in cooling mode, or cool exhaust air outdoors in heating mode. Connections should be sealed so conditioned air does not leak back into the room.
Depending on the model, they can also dehumidify without cooling and some provide supplemental heating.
Depending on the model, drainage can use a removable tank, a drain hose, or automatic evaporation through the exhaust hose. High-humidity conditions may still require manual drainage.
Condensate can overflow and leak if it is not removed. Stagnant water can also encourage mold growth.
