Teachers Study Up on Science

New Jersey teachers learn new ways to inspire students to create sustainable communities

Recently, teachers became the students. At the Honeywell Institute for Ecosystems Education (HIEE), sixteen educators learned critical and creative thinking skillsthrough socio-environmental problem solving.

A collaboration between Honeywell, New Jersey Audubon, and Jersey City Public Schools, HIEE hasinspired more than 1,000 Jersey City students over the last decade to helpcreate more sustainable schools.

The four-day innovative summer institute combines classroom instruction with diverse outdoor experiences, including a visit to a former Jersey City Reservoir and a school butterfly garden.

HIEE "I am planning sustainability and environmental work that can be donelocally. I am going to start school byshowing my students the biodiversity of the school courtyard, then we are goingto look at the neighborhood around the school. I am going to take them to Lincoln Park in Jersey City and then let themgo from there and explore the rest of the world."

"HIEE willchange the way I teach my students. Moving away from lectures, which do nothold their attention, I am going to give them topics, and have them teachme. In a sense, they are getting theirhands-on experience before I even give them much of the information. And together, we will connect theinformation."

"TheHoneywell Institute for Ecosystems Education has opened my eyes to local andcommunity resources that can be utilized in our city. For example, the trip to the Jersey CityReservoir was inspiring. I want my kidsto know it is available and that they can learn about biodiversity right in ourcommunity."- Gabrielle Flora, Henry Snyder High School, Jersey City

Guided by 2016 HIEE teachers, projects ranged frominstalling timers to encourage energy savings to building a butterfly habitatand garden for art and music inspiration.
