Honeywell Inspires Middle East Students To Reach For The Stars

Going into space is every child's dream. Of course, only a lucky few grow up to become astronauts, but thanks to a recent initiative in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), more students are now being inspired to seek a career in space research and exploration.

Honeywell recently partnered with Emirates Foundation to sponsor Think Science Connect 2017 -- a national program that empowers students to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related fields. The campaign is part of our efforts to inspire the next generation of UAE engineers and scientists, at a time when the country is ramping up its investments in space-related programs and technologies.

At the April event, Honeywell honored four UAE-based teachers during a special "Flight Suit Ceremony" ahead of their participation in the Honeywell Educators at Space Academy (HESA) professional development program to be held at a NASA training facility in June. The teachers will join 200 others from around the world at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) in Huntsville, Alabama, for an all-expenses paid, week-long program that promotes STEM education. The objective is to enable teachers to inspire their classrooms with ideas, lessons and other materials, creating an unforgettable learning experience for youth globally.

Honeywell's guest of honor at Think Science Connect 2017 was former NASA astronaut Don Thomas. He shared stories of his four NASA Space Shuttle missions and his time living and working in space. In addition, Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) which hosts HESA discussed the benefits of attending Space Camp.

Norm Gilsdorf, president, Honeywell High Growth Regions, Middle East, Russia, Turkey and Central Asia, commented: “Our collaboration with Emirates Foundation for the Think Science Fair 2017 comes as part of our commitment to the region and our global efforts to inspire students and teachers while empowering the next generation of scientists and engineers.” Honeywell's involvement with Think Science is supported by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company's corporate citizenship initiative, which has helped inspire more than three million students at all grade levels worldwide to embrace STEM education. Introduced in 2004, the HESA program has taught more than 2,600 teachers from 56 countries, and has offered creative strategies for engaging students in STEM education.

With a lot of hard work and support from Honeywell, here's hoping these children's dreams become a reality as they lead the next generation of space scientists and explorers who dare to reach for the stars.
