Helping Hands in Time of Need

Disaster brings employees together in Canada

In a rare meteorological event in September, six tornadoes descended upon Ottawa, Canada, damaging homes and knocking out power to thousands. In a matter of seconds, Honeywell Building Solutions Security Technician Jason Nicholson’s house and garage were destroyed, leaving his family homeless.

Jason was faced with the daunting task of cleaning up and rebuilding his home. But he did not face it alone. Approximately 100 employees and friends arrived at his home to get started on the clean-up, joined by ADI, a local supplier, who set up a barbecue picnic for the volunteers.

Volunteers brought ATV’s, trailers and chainsaws to get the job done. They cut down damaged trees and picked up the scattered remains of his home, including roof trusses, shingles and plywood. Many pieces were tossed over a mile away. By the end of the day, the group had built a bonfire from damaged trees and filled two truck bins with metal and non-burnable items.

Additional support came from the Honeywell Humanitarian Relief Fund, funded by employees, which provided immediate financial assistance to help Jason restore his home.

“My heart grew bigger today for the family, friends, neighbors and co-workers who helped clean up,” said Jason. “Thank you.”
