What Happens When A Nobel Laureate Visits Campus

For students in the Czech Republic and Mexico, it wasn’t just another day in class

A typical day in a college student’s life includes classes, homework, library visits, club meetings and socializing. But occasionally, something different happens.

For students in the Czech Republic and Mexico, the difference was having Professor Stefan W. Hell and Dr. George F. Smoot visit their campuses as part of the the Honeywell Initiative for Science and Engineering.

The program, sponsored by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative, aims to encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

At the Czech Technical University (CTU), Prof. Stefan W. Hell, 2014 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, encouraged more than 5,000 engineering students who attended his lectures in-person and via video streaming to “challenge conventional wisdom, even when it is not appreciated by others.”

“Innovation may be delayed by resisters, but it cannot be stopped," he continued. After his lecture, Prof. Hell met students and answered their questions about his work.

At the institute of Technology in Chihuahua, Dr. Smoot, 2004 Nobel Prize winner in physics, also encouraged students to question current opinion.

“Use your imagination to find new ways to overcome technical hurdles,” Dr. Smoot said to more than 10,000 students who attended his lectures live and via video streaming to campuses across Mexico.

While in Chihuahua,
Dr. Smoot  also visited the Honeywell Design Center, where he checked out current innovations, including the Honeywell BW Technologies Gas Monitor.
